SHR-01The Karoliner Ride

We will follow the tracks of King Karl the XII and his troops (26,000 men) on their path across the border to Nord Bakke in Norway, at the beginning of the 18th century. You will spend 5–8 hours in the saddle every day and we’ll travel at a tempo according to the riding experience of the group. We will start at Steneby Ranch in Dalsland in Sweden.

This ride is an escapade in western saddles, during which you will meet new friends who share your interest in horses, nature and adventure. The ride offers a wonderful mix of wilderness and wildlife encounters, relaxing together with horses and new friends. If you are interested in history, you will certainly enjoy this historic ride.

You will also have time to go on a Stockholm sightseeing tour. Depending on your arrival/departure times, there might be plenty of time to explore the capital, and go shopping as well.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival/Stockholm
Arrival at Arlanda Airport; meet-and-greet, followed by transfer to your accommodation in Stockholm. If you arrive early, we recommend getting the Stockholm Card, which gives you access to most museums in Stockholm, the Stockholm underground and local buses.

Day 2: Stockholm – Dals Långed
Take the train from Stockholm to Dals Långed, where you will be met and transferred to your accommodation at Baldersnäs Manor House. We recommend a walk in the beautiful park before dinner.

Day 3: The Ride Begins
We will give a presentation on our horses, the equipment and an overview of the days to come. At 11:00, we’ll be in the saddle and on the way to Dals Ed. All your personal items will be transported by car to our campsite for the night. What you need for the day (swimsuit or raingear), you will bring in the saddlebags.  After passing the farm called Stora Havden, we will have reached the deep forests of Dalsland. After two hours later, we will arrive at the beautiful Lake Grann. Here we will stop for coffee, and maybe a swim. We’ll continue north along the lake. Shortly thereafter, we will find an inviting spot for the lunch we have brought with us. In the afternoon we’ll pass the Gäseruds Cottage, a museum showing Swedish life during the 1700s and 1800s. We will now be halfway to Dals Ed, where we will end the day’s ride. We’ll take care of the horses and the equipment and settle in for the night.

Day 4: Tresticklan National Park and the Norwegian Border
Breakfast at 8:00, and by 9:00 we’ll be starting to saddle up again. We’ll now be at the same spot where King Karl XII was some 300 years ago. Here he gathered about 26,000 men to march towards the Fort in Halden. We will ride the same way he did. By lunchtime, we will pass Klevmarken, well known today for its large wolf population. This is the beginning of Sweden’s newest National Park, Tresticklan. We’ll stop for lunch somewhere before the Norwegian border. During the afternoon, we will cross the border river and pass the small town of Halleröd on the Norwegian side. After about 30 minutes, the buildings will be long gone, and we’ll be back in the calm, beautiful forests of Norway. We will now ride on roads and paths, sometimes needing to get off and lead our horses over more difficult passages. This mountain trail is a pass over the mountain, taking us to Nordbakke, our goal for the day! Upon arrival, we’ll take care of the horses, get settled and have dinner, after having spent about 8 hours in the saddle.

Day 5: Fredrikstens Fort
We’ll have breakfast a little later, as our ride today is a bit shorter. After getting back in the saddle, we’ll head northwest towards today’s goal, Halden and the beautiful Fredrikstens Fort. The landscape consists of Plateau Mountains and valleys with lakes. We will leave the horses in a barn as we are transported the last kilometre to the Fort. Once at the fort, you’ll have time to join the guided tour. In the evening, we will all gather around the long table in the King’s Hall for a fabulous 17th century-like dinner. This will be quite a large dinner party, with many participants, and we’ll be VIPs.

Day 6: Nordbakke
Breakfast at 9:00 at Kroa. Around 11:00, we’ll start our ride back towards Nordbakke. The terrain is very varied and offers many exciting moments. Once we arrive at Nordbakke, at around 16:00, we’ll take care of our horses and get settled for the evening. You can walk to Lake Ör for a swim. If you are interested, there are historic ruins and graves to visit. Dinner will be cooked over the campfire!

Day 7: Back to Sweden
Breakfast at 8:00. We’ll pack our gear and get our horses ready for a long 8-hour day in the saddle. We will choose trails according to the experience of the group, as many different types of terrain are offered. Our horses will take us through forests, over hills and alongside lakes. We’ll make stops for coffee breaks, lunch, and even a swim if anyone feels like it. The day will end at Dals Ed, at around 18:00.

Day 8: Last riding day
Breakfast at 8:00. Our last day of the ride offers more beautiful nature. We will get back into the forests of Dalsland and stop for breaks beside lakes with crystal-clear water. Again we’ll cook our lunch over a campfire, and you will have an opportunity for a swim. We’ll be back at the ranch at around 5:00 in the afternoon.  Dinner at Baldersnäs Manor House, where you’ll also stay the night.

Day 9: Return to Stockholm
After breakfast, you’ll have time to explore the surroundings, and maybe see the elks that live on the farm, before you are transferred to the train station for your trip back to Stockholm. Overnight in Stockholm.

Day 10: Departure
Passengers departing on the afternoon flight will have time to explore the amazing Old Town, with its narrow alleys and beautiful medieval houses—a perfect way to end your stay Stockholm. Transfer from Stockholm by Arlanda Express to Arlanda Airport.
