This tour will give you good insight into Swedish royalty, past and present.
First stop is at Ulriksdals Slott castle situated in Edsviken in Stockholm city. Many different Swedish regents have made this 17th century castle what it is today and your guide will tell you stories about its tragic and romantic history. From Edsviken we drive to the close by Haga Park, considered to be the foremost example of the English park culture in Sweden. The current King, Carl Gustav XVI, spent his summers here in his youth. We pass the famous Karolinska University Hospital on the way to Lovö Church, dating back to the 12th century. During restoration runic stones were found in the church wall and they are now on display around the church. We proceed to the royal hunting palace Svartsjö Slott, beautifully located on Färingsö outside Stockholm. The palace has a long history as royal residence; as early as the medieval times a stone house was built here, well visited by Kings and Aristocracy. As a grand finale we pay a visit to the Drottningholm palace which is one of Europe’s most magnificent palaces. The palace took 37 years to build and was finished in 1699. The Princess Lovisa Ulrika of Preussen married the Swedish Crown Prince Adolf Fredrik in 1744 and got the Drottningholm palace as a wedding present from her husband. The Swedish Royal Family has had its home here since 1981. In 1991 Drottningholm Palace was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List—all in all, Sweden has 14 buildings and sites on this list. |
